My next adventure in 2 months time – climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania for children and families like little Bassem
This is one of the reasons why I am climbing Mt Kilimanjaro for charity:
Little Bassem’s rib’s protrude as he lies in a medical centre in Aslan, Yemen. His clothes hang off him, his hair has thinned, and his face is sunken.
He’s one of 2.4 million Yemeni children who need treatment for malnutrition and are at risk of starvation. Malnutrition rates in parts of Yemen are higher than they have ever been. The UN has warned that Yemen is at risk of losing an entire generation of children, to this completely preventable, completely curable, man-made curse of hunger.
When his grandmother, Hasna, holds him, Bassem is swallowed by her hands, a bundle of his knees, eyes, and ears that appear far too big for his tiny, shrunken frame.
“My grandson has been suffering from malnutrition since we were in a region of Shadda,”. “I’m afraid I’ll lose him like his father, my only son.”
The clinic is lined with mothers, fathers, and grandparents telling similar stories, each of them desperate to save the child in their arms. All too often, they hold tiny babies, fighting to stay alive in a world that refuses to save them.
Lise Grande, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, has warned that, without immediate action, it will be too late:
“Yemen is on the brink of a catastrophic food security crisis…we are nearing an irreversible situation and risk losing an entire generation of Yemen’s young children,”
she said.
This is one of my reasons for climbing Mt Kilimanjaro – I was heartbroken a few months ago to watch videos & see photos about the dire situation in Yemen.
Could you sponsor me and donate to our campaign where we are raising emergency funds for those in need of food, medical aid and assistance?
